the story....

The Sun Never Sets On Cacoola

In Brazil, some misguided people vow that it increases sexual prowess, others are under the delusion that it makes a man impotent. In Haiti, they say it is the only thing that will cause Damballah and his wife Ayida Oueddo, a pair of the chief deities of the voodoo pantheon, to put in an appearance at a voodoo session. Chinese bankers have taken to serving it instead of tea, and Italian aristocrats offer it to their guests instead of champagne. Graceful gondolas carry it along the narrow canals of Venice, and sturdy, resigned burros tote it into the dusty Mexican hills. Bright red signs proclaim its worth in the shadow of the Matterhorn and beneath the blank, unastonished eyes of the great Sphinx. The gentle burps which it evokes from the drinker are heard amid the bustle of Parisian sidewalk cafes and amid the tinkling of Siamese temple bells.

People almost everywhere are buying it as if it were the biggest glass of ambrosia in the world for a nickel. Actually, according to the official and modest definition of its makers, it is only "a soft drink . . . best described as delicious and refreshing." Its name, of course, is Coca-Cola.

The Essence of America. The late William Allen White once described Coke as the "sublimated essence of all America stands for." To find something as thoroughly native American hawked in half a hundred languages on all the world's crossroads from Arequipa to Zwolle is still strangely anomalous, somewhat like reading Dick Tracy in French or seeing a Japanese actor made up to look like Abraham Lincoln. But it is reassuring. It is also simpler, sharper evidence than the Marshall Plan or a Voice of America broadcast that the U.S. has gone out into the world to stay.

Coke's peaceful near-conquest of the world is one of the remarkable phenomena of the age. It has put itself (in the phrase of a Coca-Cola executive with a literary bent) "always within an arm's length of desire." And where there is no desire for it, Coke creates desire. Its advertising, which garnishes the world from the edge of the Arctic to the Cape of Good Hope, has created more new appetites and thirsts in more people than an army of dancing girls bearing jugs of wine. It has brought refrigeration to sweltering one-ox towns without plumbing, and it has transformed men one generation removed from jungle barter into American salesmen with an irresistibly sincere approach. It has successfully defied the concerted attacks of all Communist mouthpieces which denounce it as a drink vile, imperialistic and poisonous. Its makers suspect that it is the biggest thing since America provided oil to light the lamps of China and celluloid fables to feed the dreams of the world.

Coca-Cola is not what the non-American thinks of asa typical U.S. business, like steel or automobiles. It is not a product of the vast natural resources of the land, but of the American genius for business organization. It rests on such intangibles as market analysis, sales training, advertising and financial decentralization. Increasingly, through the past three decades, U.S. business progress has been a matter of such intangibles. It was time the world caught up with that fact, which Coca-Cola was demonstrating in an edifice of international business, built on a little water, sugar and flavoring.

VALENTINO THE LAST EMPEROR

Interview With Director Matt Tyrnauer

Valentino: The Last Emperor, produced and directed by Matt Tyrnauer, Special Correspondent for Vanity Fair magazine, is an intimate and engaging fly-on-the-wall exploration of the singular world of one of Italy's most famous men. The film documents the colorful and dramatic closing act of Valentino's celebrated career, tells the story of his extraordinary life, and explores the larger themes affecting the fashion business today. At the heart of the film is the unique relationship between Valentino and his business partner and companion of 50 years, Giancarlo Giammetti. Here follows the Ohlala Interview with movie creator Matt Tyrnauer:

Q: Tell us about Valentino The Last Emperor experience ?
MT: Surreal at times. Blissful at others. Like all major projects, 7th ring of hell on occasion. This is a movie that on its surface is about fashion, about the designer Valentino, but there are other layers of complexity. It's really, in fact, a love story about Valentino and his partner of 50 years, Giancarlo Giammetti. This relationship is a proto-gay marriage: a partnership of exquisite complexity and almost supernatural closeness. It is also fascinating to watch. It’s the core of the movie. The relationship is why I wanted to make the movie. I am not a fashion writer. For me the movie has fashion as a backdrop to a universal story of love and commitment, about going someplace together, and achieving your dreams together. This for two men is rather hard to do. But I was fascinated by this partnership that endured and also, by the by, produced a multi-billion dollar empire. The movie chronicles the end of that empire, as the light on the world of haute couture is practically extinguished with the retirement of Valentino. The experience of actually making the film brought me to Rome about once a month, where I entered the world of Valentino: where the halls are perfumed each day before his arrival, every meal is served by waiters with white gloves, and five pugs fly private. It all sounds very cozy and beautiful, and it is. But there were challenges: Valentino and Giancarlo, being Olympic class control freaks, were not easy to work with. That is not to say that they are not extraordinary and worth the trouble, but they are just used to things being done their way. I had final cut on a film about them, so I was sometimes a thorn in their side, and they let me know that without any hesitation. Valentino was losing it left and right, sometimes on camera. He is given to some fits in the course of the work day, and you have to give him that. He is a perfectionist genius. Giancarlo, much the same for his end of things, the business. He can pitch a good, effective, fit. I put a lot of Valentino's explosions in the movie, as I think they help communicate the full idea of who he is. (Did he like that? No. Did he ask me not to do it? More or less. But I told him many times: If you come off looking like a perfect rare flower, you will not be admired at the end of this film. You need to show some struggle, some flaws. And he does, and he is happy now that he does. He says he accepts it, and he sees that the public only loves him more for showing his flaws.) Suffice it to say that even on the eve of the Venice Film Festival, where we had our world premiere, Valentino and Giancarlo still had grave doubts about the film, and specifically their roles. After the screening (1,600 in the sale grande on the Lido), the movie got a standing ovation, and Valenitno burst into tears. They have embraced the movie since that day
Q: What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
MT: The films of Robert Aldrich, John Ford and Howard Hawks; the writing of Gore Vidal and Edith Wharton; southern Italy, the presidency of Barack Obama.

Q: Your most marked characteristic?
MT: Blond hair, blue eyes, Jew. What you see is not always what you get.

Q: What is your greatest fear in life?
MT: Italy will become more like France.

Q: When and where were you happiest?
MT: Commuting from New York to Rome film this movie.
Q: What is your most treasured possession?
MT: My collection of signed Gore Vidal first editions.

Q: What do you most value in people?
MT: Humor.

Q: Where would you like to live?
MT: Commuting between L.A., New York and Naples, Italy, would be ideal.

Q: Where do you see your self five years from now ?
MT: Che sarà, sarà. Live in the moment.

Who is Andrew DiPalma ?
I'm an actor from the East Coast - I was born in Philadelphia and moved to the South for high school and college. I have been in LA for 2 years and I love it. I focus primarily on TV and Film work - and I love doing commercials and print. I speak fluent Spanish and love to travel. I've been really lucky with my journey out here in LA - I've teamed up with a lot of great people and things are really falling into place for me. I'm grateful for the way things have turned out.

Where have we seen you before ?
My first film was in 2006 with Kate Mara and Matthew McConaughey called "We Are Marshall," where I played a Marshall University student co-starring with Kate. I recently did a film called Deadgirl, a coming-of-age horror film where I played the quintessential high school "jock" - which was a much edgier, darker role for me. Deadgirl debuted last September at the Toronto International Film Festival during Midnight Madness to sold out screenings and is set for Theatrical release this upcoming July. I had a co-starring role on ABC Family's "The Middleman" as well.

What are your upcoming projects ?
I just finished shooting "The Joneses" which starrs David Duchovny and Demi Moore. I was cast to play David Duchovny's golf instructor. That is due out sometime this year.

Where did you go to college?
I went to The University of Georgia. I have a degree in Spanish, and a degree in Advertising.

What is your favorite city?
My favorite city is Barcelona. I lived there for a year in college to study Spanish. It is, without a doubt, the perfect city for me.

How do you stay in shape ?
I work out :) Going to the gym has become therapeutic for me. I have a ways to go...

What do you enjoy doing in you free time?
Free time - what free time? I work a lot and keep really busy. I like catching up on movies and TV shows that I'm usually behind on.

Where do you see your self 5 years from now?
In five years I hope to have a very successful career in the public eye underway and lots of philanthropic work.

JONATHAN WAUD by ALEK & STEPH + INTERVIEW

Jonathan Waud was a runner-up on the latest season of Bravo’s reality competition, Make Me A Supermodel, but many thought he should have been awarded the winner after being voted the show’s Fan Favorite on BravoTV.com. A dedicated family man, Jonathan endures a hectic schedule, balancing work while still making quality time to share with his wife and 21 month old son. He has lived in Los Angeles for three years, but was born and raised in Southampton, England. A graduate of the University of the West of England in Bristol, Jonathan earned a degree in French and International Business.

Along with Jonathan's interview we have for you the very first look at the photoshoot we did with him last week in Los Angeles. Jonathan is such a nice person and a fantastic model to work with.

Tell us about your experience on Bravo's Make me a Super Model show ?
JW: It was unlike any other experience I've ever had. Being confined 24/7 with 15 other contestants... having a bath or shower was the only real time you could get away from everyone even if for just a minute! Wouldn't change anything about my time on the show, made some great friends and got a chance to take part in once in a lifetime photo shoots.

What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
JW: Creatively, I love going to friends homes and seeing how they have styled their places. There is something in design that I love and drive my wife crazy because I'm constantly wanting to move all the furniture around and repaint all the walls. We actually moved furniture this weekend. Spiritually and emotionally… anything that gives you perspective and lets you see the bigger picture.

If you were a reincarnation of someone or something what or who would it be?
JW: I think I would actually be a sports car… a sports car in the south of France. Whenever I'm down there driving along the coastal road, it brings out this smile so deep down that it’s like I have a coat-hanger in my mouth! Grinning ear to ear. I have such a passion for cars.
What is your most treasured possession?
JW: Easy....my wife and child

Any current projects we should be aware of ?
JW: Working on a couple of things....I could tell you but I'd have to kill you... LOL.

What is your favorite occupation?
JW: Modeling is great fun, as you get to travel and be creative. I also really enjoyed being on the show and hope to be in front of a camera again soon.

Where would you like to live?
JW: I've actually been fortunate to live in many places but I love Los Angeles and New York for completely different reasons.

What is your motto?
JW: Better to regret something you HAVE done than something you HAVEN'T.

What do you wear when you sleep?
JW: Usually I sleep in the buff but if we have guests I rock out in my
boxer briefs

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
JW: 5 years.... continue to do what I love... modeling, have involvement with television, and get to spend time with my family.
